There are tons, and I feel like I’m seeing snakehead get thrown around a lot, so I’ll present you with some other options as well. However, if you’re referring to if they have an actual name that describes fish (as a whole) that look like snakes, the answer is no.

Here are some snake-like fish if that’s what you meant:

The one above is a Northern Snakehead, but there are tons of different types – 28 different species currently recognized, actually.

Pike cichlids:

With a similarly large “family” (though not all are related) there are at least 10 species that go under the moniker of “pike cichlids.”

There are a few species that fall under the “pike” umbrella term as well, the one above is a Northern Pike.

OMG are they not just too cute?! They’re also called reed fish and come from the bichir family and, speaking of which…

Also have a large family (the one above is a Lapradei) I’m unsure how many recognized species there currently are, but I can think of at least 10 off the top of my head.

Dragon Goby:

Despite their monstrous appearance… they’re actually herbivores. Other gobies have similar appearances, more often than not and it’s also – not surprisingly – another large family.

Also, again, huge family. The one above is a fire track eel, it gets to be a little over 3′ long.

You’d probably recognize them a little better from pictures such as this nightmare fuel…

Yeah, that’s the same fish.

At any rate, more than just snakeheads look snake-like. There are also a few more fringe cases, but they’re a little rarer for people to describe as “snake-like” (mostly because few people know much about them):

Look at that face! Isn’t it just the derpyest? There are also quite a few species of lungfish.

Some knifefish, like the Ossa above, look snake-like.

The above is a picture of the Atlantic Wolf Fish and, by God, those things are mean as all get out. There’s a somewhat similar-looking freshwater version of this terror. There’s also a red wolf fish that looks somewhat like a snakehead.

First off, there are saly and brackish water snakes. Eels are not really snakes but the look like them. They are really good eating with a nice garlic sauce. Snakes are ok but do not have much flavor and they really do taste like chicken.

Depends on the fish. But a common one is the eel:

Fish probably came before snakes so maybe the snakes are eel-like. Eel-like is a shape that many many fish take on since it’s a quite efficient body pattern. Some examples are

Eels anguilliformes – 820 species and 20 families or soPipefish – signathidaeLamprey and Hagfish (these might be some of the earliest extant fish with this morphology)BichirSnakeheadsEtc etc etc I can think of so many…

If you have a question about a specific fish, I’m sure there are plenty that can give you an answer here.

You also get sea snakes, which look just like snakes, but invariably have a flattened tail which it uses to swim more efficiently.

Eels aren’t related to snakes, so what are they related to?

An eel is a fish. It’s not closely related to snakes at all. Eels are more closely related to all other ray-finned fish than they are to any type of land-dwelling animal like a snake.

I believe fish evolved before snakes, so the question goes the other way around. The answer, I believe, is an eel.

Why is a milk snake called a “milk snake”?

There used to be a myth that they would drink cows’ milk and make them go dry. This is probably because they tended to be found in barns pretty often, since there’s plenty of rodents for them to hunt there.

The fish you are probably asking about is called a Snakehead. Snakeheads are native to Asia and Africa and they are an invasive species in the United States. They have the ability to crawl across land for some distance from pond to pond or lake so eradicating them from the US has been very difficult. They are voracious predators as adults and eat native US fish and thus compete with native predatory fish species such as the Largemouth Bass. We have spent a lot of time and money trying to eliminate them from Arkansas but they are still around. They are apparently quite good to eat and in some parts of the world they are considered a delicacy. I wish we could eat them all to extinction in the United States.

Can you feed a snake with a fish?

It depends on the snake, and it depends on the fish. Goldfish and rosy-reds shouldn’t be fed to snakes, because they are high in thiaminase, which can lead to thiamine deficiency in the snake. Previously frozen fish also contain inadequate levels of thiamine. So finding the right kind of fresh fish can be challenging.

Garter, ribbon, and water snakes will all readily accept fish, as will many other snakes commonly found in and around water. Snakes that typically eat rodents, such as corn snakes, ball pythons, etc, shouldn’t be fed fish.

Moray eels are amazing. Moray eels are fish, with gills and a long fine dorsal fin connected from its head to its ass. True, morays have lost their pelvic fins and they look quite serpentine but do not let that little alien fool you. When it comes to intelligence, morays have been known to cooperate with another species of fish, the grouper. When a grouper need the moray to investigate something, it will communicate with a wiggle that apparently the moray understands and the moray will go with the grouper to flush out prey where the grouper tell it, again by wiggling. The moray can go in the crooks and crevices while grouper patrols space above, ready to pounce on anything the moray eel flushes out. This kind of communication requires intelligence. Maybe they know each other, have cooperated before. This might even relate to emotional intelligence.

fun fact about moray eels: Moray eels have a movable pharyngeal jaw.

image source: How moray eels feed – How It Works

Just like the xenomorph alien but when H.R. Giger created the inner mouth for the alien, it was not known that the eels possess a similar mechanism. We only learned of this around 2006 and the alien was filmed in 1979. It was Ridley Scott that came up with the idea to make the inner mouth in the alien movable.

I am thinking of animating my xenomorph and have the jaw drop and pharyngeal jaw slide out.

The electric eel generates large electric currents by way of a highly specialized nervous system that has the capacity to synchronize the activity of disc-shaped, electricity-producing cells packed into a specialized electric organ. The nervous system does this through a command nucleus that decides when the electric organ will fire. When the command is given, a complex array of nerves makes sure that the thousands of cells activate at once, no matter how far they are from the command nucleus.

Each electrogenic cell carries a negative charge of a little less than 100 millivolts on its outside compared to its inside. When the command signal arrives, the nerve terminal releases a minute puff of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter. This creates a transient path with low electrical resistance connecting the inside and the outside of one side of the cell. Thus, each cell behaves like a battery with the activated side carrying a negative charge and the opposite side a positive one.

Because the cells are oriented inside the electric organ like a series of batteries piled into a flashlight, the current generated by an activated cell “shocks” any inactive neighbor into action, setting off an avalanche of activation that runs its course in just two milliseconds or so. This practically simultaneous start-up creates a short-lived current flowing along the eel’s body. If the eel lived in air, the current could be as high as one ampere, turning the creature’s body into the equivalent of a 500-volt battery. But eels live in water, which provides additional outlets for the current.

What was probably the largest snake on earth?

Though I hate snakes from the depth of my heart, I will bring in quality content for my friends.

So friends, the probable largest snake on earth to ever exist was:

From the lands of North-East Columbia, there existed a prehistoric mammoth, a snake big enough to devour the fiercest of juggernauts in the Animalia kingdom.

It was the Titanoboa!

(Picture used for description)

Gladly this big guy is extinct. The Titanoboa, weighed 2500 pounds and was 40 feet long. The snake is known to hunt and devour gigantic crocodiles. Fossils of Titanoboa have been found in the Cerrejón Formation, and date to around

What are snakehead fish?

Snakehead are an invasive species that is wreaking havoc in Florida. I usually catch and release fish. Not snakehead. I catch them and kill them. They are actually a good flakey white fish to eat.

They outcompete all native fish. In fact, possession of live snakehead is a second degree misdemeanor punishable by up to a $500 fine and/or 60 days in jail. Florida law also makes it a crime for anyone to release any exotic fish into state waters.

I live in NE Broward County Florida where they are decimating native fish. They have very sharp teeth and can breath air so they can move once they have eat

Is Moray eel a fish?

Though Moray eels(along with other eel species) have snake like appearance they are fishes and not reptiles.

The Muraenidae family or Moray eels are found in both deep and shallow waters in tropical and sub-tropical regions. There are almost 200 species in 15 genera and are exclusively marine but sometimes found in brackish water and few in fresh water.

A saltwater Moray eel.

Is eel considered a fish?

Eels are bony fish. Specifically, they are ray finned fish. They are not sharks. They have typical fish anatomy but for the shape.

Electric eels are not related to the other eels. However, they are also ray finned fish with real bones. So electric eels are true fish. Their anatomy is extremely weird, though. They are not true eels.

Slime eels, otherwise called hagfish, are extremely different from ray finned fish. They have few if any bones. They do not have ray fins. They are fish, but barely.

What is the relation between snakes and fish?

Snakes descended from lizards which evolved to lose their legs. Lizards evolved from primitive reptiles which evolved from amphibians. Amphibians (such as frogs and salamanders) hatch from eggs laid in water by the mother and come to land later after they develop lungs and lose their fish-gills and grow legs. But reptiles lay eggs on land except a tiny number of species that give live birth in the sea. Remember the example of sea turtles coming out of the ocean to lay eggs under the sand on the beach.

Amphibians evolved from fish that evolved to get oxygen from air-sacs in their bodies, and out

Are humans more like fish or snakes?

Humans are not similar to either of them, but we are closer to snakes as we both are amniotes and have a more recent common ancestor that any of us has with fish. That means that both snakes and humans young grow in a liquid reservoir inside a waterproof membrane (inside an egg for snakes and the mother body for humans). This allows us to bear young away from water.

We both are also terrestrial animals with lungs for breathing air. And descend from organisms with four limbs (tetrapoda), despite snakes having lost theirs.

Were snakes originally called worms?

At certain locations and eras of history snakes were called worms, dragons were called worms (eg “the famous Lambton Worm” and “The Lair of the White Worm” [Bram Stoker/Ken Russell])

See the town of Ormskirk, Lancashire -(Ormskirk – Wikipedia) (subhead: History).

Even some insects were called worms. There are some nice Biblical passages where discussion of “worms” segues into talk of expensively dyed clothing. Scarlet Dye of the Holy Land and it’s probable that the beastie referred to was actually an insect or the larva of one, from which red or purple dye was extracted. Woodworms and glow-worms
